Friday, May 7 – Free Public Bike Safety Class
Time: 12-1 p.m.Location: NH Department of Environmental Services
Details: DES is kicking off Commute Green 2010 activities early with a great event at its office on 29 Hazen Dr., Concord.
The agency is partnering with Bike-Walk Alliance of NH for a lunch-time bike education class that is free and open to the public. Spaces are first come, first serve. Attendees should be prepared to show photo identification inside the main entrance lobby. The following topics will be covered by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor Dave Topham:
- Bike selection, sizing and mechanical checks
- Proper helmet use
- Rules of the roads including cyclist-to-cyclists signaling
- Clothing suitable for cycling and personal “protection”
- Bike commuting tips, gear to carry, and lighting
- Q&A period as time allows

Monday, May 17 – Bicyling Day – Downtown Concord Event
Time: 7-9 a.m.Location: City Plaza Details: Bicyclists of all ages and abilities and all green commuters are encouraged to bike to work for the day. But all “alternative” modes are welcome! On your way, stop by and pick up free yogurt from Stonyfield, fresh baked goods from the Red Blazer and coffee and bagels from the Works Bakery Café and In A Pinch Café and Bakery. Mayor Bouley has been invited to read a Mayoral Proclamation and issue a Commute Green 2010 Challenge to all Concord residents. Want to learn how to fix a flat and check your bike for safety issues? Now you can. Goodales Bike Shop will be available to show people how to do all of these things.
Whether you’ve never commuted by bike before or are a seasoned veteran, there will be a commuter bike ride for you. There are 20+ locations around the region where bicyclists of all ages and abilities will be meeting up and converging at the event site. Details: Concord Hospital is helping you get into the Spring bike commuting season with a great event at its main building in Conference Room A. The Hospital is partnering with Bike-Walk Alliance of NH for a lunch-time bike education class that is free and open to the public. Spaces are first come, first serve. The Hospital will also be providing in limited quantities free reflective vests for bicyclists and prizes at the event and downtown Concord events. Tuesday, May 18 – Public Transportation day – Downtown Concord Event
Time: 7-9 a.m.Location: City Plaza Details: Never used public transportation in Concord before? No problem. Today’s your day to learn. Concord Area Transit is offering great opportunities to ride and learn how easy it is to ride and get where you need to go. There will also be plenty of free food and music on hand for you at this great event. Stonyfield is providing free yogurt drinks, Café Indigo is providing delicious fresh baked goods and In A Pinch Café and Bakery is providing the morning coffee. Local Rock performer Chris Peters will be keeping us all moving.
The Concord Trolley System will be open to all passengers free of charge for the entire time it runs on this day. Plus, a single full fare ride will be free on the entire Concord Area Transit bus system will be available to anyone who boards a bus and provides a non-perishable food item on this day. Food items will be donated to a local recipient. Concord Area Transit will also provide free rides from the Dick’s Sporting Goods bus stop on Loudon Road to downtown.
A representative from the commuter bus line Concord Coach Lines will also be on hand to talk about bus schedules, routes and how and where to use their easy-to-use and comfortable buses. Concord Coach Lines will also be raffling off prizes to people who stop by and green commuted for the day. Goodales Bike Shop will also be on hand to show you how to fix a flat and check your bike for safety issues.

Wednesday, May 19 – Walk to Work Day – Downtown Concord Event
Time: 11-1 p.m.Location: Eagle Square
Details: Last year’s walk for 250 Boloco mini-burritos was a lot of fun and a huge success. All winter, people clamored for another event like it, and Boloco has answered to call! This year, Boloco will again be giving away A LOT of mini-burritos to people who walk to/around downtown Concord (or used another green commute method), while the local Bluegrass and Folk band Bow Junction will play sets during the event to entertain us all.

Employees from the state agencies listed above have indicated they will be organizing coworkers for the event. The locations where people will meet up and walk over is listed in this editable map. Additionally, Concord residents Colette Farland-Vogt and Alex Vogt will be leading a walk to Hazen Drive for their morning commute that is open to the public. Thursday, May 20 – Carpooling Day – Downtown Concord Event
Time: 11-1 p.m.Location: Eagle Square
Details: Carpooling to lunch is an easy way to get in the habit of carpooling. So, we’re going to help you get started. Hermanos Cocina Mexicana and Stonyfield will be providing free lunch and drinks to anyone who carpools to the event.
While you are at Eagle Square, you will get to meet representatives from the state’s carpool matching program called NH Rideshare and learn how you can start carpooling. Also hear facts and fun stories from PATH members who have been carpooling.

Time: 7-9 a.m.Location: City Plaza
Details: Bike/Walk to Work Day – This is the main event! Concord City Engineer Jeff Warner will be leading a closed ride with Governor John Lynch and state commissioners from Hopkinton to the State House. The event is focused on highlighting bicycling as a healthy, safe and cost-effective means of transportation that can be done by anyone. Even the governor!
Governor Lynch is expected the Commute Green 2010 Proclamation at 7:40 a.m. and there will be press availability at 8 a.m. The mood is always festive for this event, so stick around and meet fellow green commuters, trade stories about your bike rides and participate in the annual pin-map exercise.

Friday, May 21, Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23 – Second Annual Concord Bike Swap
Time: Friday – 10-8 a.m., Saturday – 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday – 10 a.m.-noon
Location: S&W Sports
Details: Have an old bike you want to donate? Looking for a vintage road bike or barely used mountain bike? Come to the Second Annual Concord Bike Swap!
Donations and consignments will be accepted until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21 at S&W Sports. The Swap will then run May 22-23. All profits from the event will be donated to the Central NH Bicycle Coalition, which is working to help build bike lanes, bike storage facilities and rail trails in the Greater Concord are.
Whether you need a bike or have a bike you'd like to get rid of, this event is for you! Bring in the bikes you aren't riding, you can donate them to the cause or they will be sold on consignment. Are you looking for a new bike? Stop by and see the selection. Bike donations are being accepted now. Just drop the bike off at S&W Sports and they will find a good home for that bike!
